In a crucial Champions League match filled with tactical maneuvering, Liverpool visited Verdelome Stadium and secured a resounding 3-0 victory over Marseille.
The turning point of the match came in first-half stoppage time when Dominik Szoboszlai, wearing the number 8 jersey, broke the deadlock with a free kick. Szoboszlai was subsequently named Man of the Match.
“Yes, I did do my homework,” Szoboszlai said in an interview. “Someone told me that if no one was lying behind the wall, I might have a chance to hit a ground ball through. I observed that no one was lying there, so I decided to try it, and it worked.”
Besides the brilliant goal, Liverpool's tactical execution throughout the match was also impressive. Szoboszlai admitted that the victory against Marseille, managed by former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, was not easy.
“It feels great, I’m very happy. But the game was really tough, as we expected beforehand, especially against this team and this coach,” Szoboszlai explained. “We’ve seen that before when we played Brighton in the Premier League. But this time we were prepared and ultimately got the three points.”
Szoboszlai further emphasized the team's pursuit of the game: "Especially at home, at Anfield, I think we, the fans and everyone deserve to see great football, and of course, victory."
"Perhaps we haven't been able to do this as many times as we expected before, but we are working on it, very focused, and communicating a lot with each other. Hopefully, this game will help us move forward."
With this victory secured, Liverpool only need to beat Qarabag at home next Wednesday to clinch in the top eight and qualify directly for the Champions League round of 16.
